Professional Experience
Candidates must have at least 2 years of professional-level experience in government financial management prior to designation as a CGFM.

Examinations
Three comprehensive examinations that make up the core requirement for the CGFM Program are:

  •   Examination 1 - Government Environment
  •   Examination 2 - Governmental Accounting, Financial Reporting and Budgeting
  •   Examination 3 - Governmental Financial Management and Control

These examinations are administered year-round in a multiple-choice, computerized format in more than 300 locations within the continental United States.  Suggested study information is available on the above website.

Code of Ethics
A CGFM must read and abide by AGA's Code of Ethics.

Continuing Professional Education
A CGFM will complete at least 80 hours of CPE in government financial management topics or related technical subjects.  The first CPE cycle starts on January 1st of the year following the year when the CGFM designation was earned.  During the first year of the CPE cycle, at least 20 hours of CPE must be completed.  A CGFM will maintain and, if requested by AGA, provide detailed information on CPE hours completed.

Individuals who are retired from and are no longer substantially working in the government financial management community are not required to remit the CGFM renewal fee or earn the required 80 CPE hours, but should notify AGA of their retirement status.
